Generic Name: fexofenadine hydrochloride

The Allegra (fexofenadine hydrochloride) is an antihistamine used to treat specific symptoms that result from histamine allergies and it is very similar to the second-generation antihistamines like astelin (azelastine). Histamine is a chemical element, which controls the nose lining swelling, itchy and water eyes, sneezing etc (all typical allergic symptoms). This chemical is stored in the mast cells and when it is released, it combines itself with any cell that can accommodate it (histamine receptors), which cause the symptoms to get turned on like a switch. Allegra blocks this �attachment� to other cells and hence prevents the starting of the allergy. This type of medicine does not enters the bloodstream, and hence does not reach the brain and induce any drowsiness. This is why this medicine is highly preferred over other antihistamines since it can be taken without disrupting the regular day�s work, as opposed to the others that cause drowsiness.

This Allegra (fexofenadine hydrochloride) is used for normal and seasonal allergies, hives in adults. Children below six years of age should not be given this medicine. The drug intake has been seen to produce some nausea, weakness and very rarely sleepiness. Other than these types of symptoms � there are not side effects.

The Allegra (fexofenadine hydrochloride) is relatively safe for pregnant women and lactating mothers � though there are no adequate studies to prove or disprove this fact. In case it is required by this bracket of people, treatment should be done strictly under the supervision of the doctor.

Contraindications to take the medicine - Do not take this medicine in case you have kidney diseases, other chronic illness, heart diseases, pregnant, or trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding. When you take this medicine keep in mind that it may interact with certain substances such as antacids, rifampin, grapefruit, apple, or orange juice and erythromycin.

The advantage of using Allegra (fexofenadine hydrochloride) is that you do not feel drowsy since it is not absorbed in the blood and hence it does not influence the brain. If you feel drowsy, please discontinue driving. It is not advisable to stand up from a sitting position quickly as it can give blackouts.
