Bactrim,
Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim are combination antibiotics that are
prescribed for a variety of bacterial infections. They are also used to treat
the pneumocystis type of pneumonia. Bactrim, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim, should not be given to children under the age of two months because of the risk of serious side effects.
Bactrim,
Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim are taken by mouth with a full eight-ounce
glass of water. If the medication causes an upset stomach, it can be taken with
food or milk. Unless advised otherwise by your doctor, it is important to drink
plenty of fluids while taking this medication in order to kidney stones from
forming. The prescribed dosage of Bactrim, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim are
based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Since antibiotics work
best when the amount of medicine in the body remains at a constant level, be
sure to evenly space your doses of Bactrim, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim in
order to achieve the best results. It is also important to continue taking
Bactrim, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim until you have used all of the
prescribed medication even if your symptoms have disappeared to prevent bacteria
from continuing to grow.
Some side effects that may be experienced while taking Bactrim,
Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of
appetite, or headache. If these effects persist or become worse, advise the
doctor or pharmacist. Some more serious side effects that may occur and should
be reported to the doctor immediately are muscle weakness, mood changes, and new
lump or growth in the goiter area of the neck. On occasion, some highly serious
side effects may occur such as blood in the urine, changes in the amount of
urine released, confusion, persistent headache, neck stiffness, and seizures.
This symptoms should be reported to your doctor immediately as they are very
serious and may require a change in medication.
Some patients may have a severe allergic reaction to Bactrim,
Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim, so be aware if you experience skin rash or
blisters, itching, swelling, persistent sore throat or fever, paleness, joint
aches or paints, persistent couch, breathing difficulty, bleeding or bruising
easily, yellow color to eyes or skin, persistent nausea or vomiting, fatigue, or
dark colored urine. Any of these signs are symptoms of a severe, and possibly
fatal allergic reaction to Bactrim, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim and should
be reported to the doctor immediately. On occasion Bactrim, Sulfamethoxazole and
Trimethoprim may cause an intestinal condition know as pseudomambranous colitis
because of stubborn bacteria and may occur weeks after therapy has stopped. Do
not use any anti-diarrhea or narcotic pain medications if you experience these
symptoms since that will worsen the condition.
The use of Bactrim, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim for long periods or
repeated therapy may cause oral thrush or a vaginal yeast infection. Call your
doctor if you experience a change in vaginal discharge or have white patches in
your mouth.
As with any medication, notify your doctor if you have any allergies,
have a history of alcohol use, or certain blood disorders. Any unusual symptoms
that occur while taking Bactrim, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim should be
reported to your doctor or pharmacist.
